Background and Statistics

The Background and Statistics section provides a backdrop for service providers related to Katrina and Rita evacuees living in Texas. The resources address the number of people affected and potentially traumatized by the storms, with special focus on those displaced by the hurricanes. Data on the demographics of these populations, as well as statistics on their displacement over time are also included.

Bureau of Labor Statistics
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) produces a wide range of labor market data that may be used to evaluate the scale of the economic disruption caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The facts and figures provided establish conditions in the most affected local labor markets as they were before the hurricanes struck. Employment status of evacuees since the hurricanes is also addressed.

Center on Philanthropy
The Center on Philanthropy provides information on Gulf Coast hurricane relief donations. Immediately following Hurricane Katrina, the Center began tracking charitable support from the United States for relief efforts in the Gulf States. The information covers publicly reported data on U.S. philanthropic organizations and the amount of gifts received for relief efforts for both Hurricanes Katrina and Rita from individuals, corporations, and foundations. It does not include the aid delivered or pledged by the U.S. government.

City of New Orleans
The City of New Orleans provides a Greater New Orleans Community Data Center that includes population and housing estimates, housing damage estimates, and reported locations of evacuees. Among this information are survey reports with population estimates, geographic repopulation trends, and population characteristics to aid in the decision-making processes of local, state, federal, and non-profit planners with accurate and reliable estimates of the size and characteristics of the population of New Orleans during the post-Hurricane Katrina recovery period. It also includes post-Katrina community resources, hurricane impact and recovery information, and pre-Katrina information. Included is a survey report containing population estimates, geographic repopulation trends, and population characteristics. The survey was conducted in January of 2006.

Community Action Network
The Community Action Network in Austin provides statistics from the City of Austin on evacuees in Austin / Travis County receiving public assistance. Information about evacuees' sociodemographic status is provided, including percentages of evacuees with various disabilities, as well as their housing and employment status.

Louisiana State University
Louisiana State University (LSU) has established a clearinghouse to facilitate the collection, dissemination, and archiving of data related to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The site contains maps and reports, as well as links to data stores and other websites. It also includes a research section with an extensive listing of links to LSU research related to the hurricanes.

U.S. Census Bureau
The U.S. Census Bureau provides information on the economy, transportation, housing, maps, and other resources related to Hurricane Katrina. Additionally, the census bureau has information on the people affected, including a Fast Facts section, residents, demographics, and social information, as well as poverty status. The link below accesses a site with links to resources in all of these areas.

Fact Finder
The U.S. Census Bureau site also provides information on population characteristics before and after the hurricanes in the Gulf Coast area.
