Frances Fowler Wallace Memorial for Mental Health Dissertation Award

Each year, the Frances Fowler Wallace Memorial for Mental Health Dissertation Award is given to provide partial support for one outstanding doctoral student's dissertation research on "the cause and treatment, cure, and prevention of mental disease, mental illness, and mental disorders" as designated by Mrs. Wallace in her will.

The award provides up to $1500 to support research-related expenses such as survey mailings, software, participant stipends, and trainings.

2007 Awardee
The 2007 recipient of the Frances Fowler Wallace Memorial for Mental Health Dissertation Award is Ms. Nalini Negi, a doctoral candidate in The University of Texas at Austin's School of Social Work.

Negi’s dissertation study will focus on the well-being of urban Latino day laborers, a little-researched topic. Through surveys and interviews with Latino day laborers in the Central Texas area, she will examine the factors that impact the well-being of day laborers, including resilience factors that protect their behavioral health.

Ms. Negi was selected for the Frances Fowler Wallace award through a competitive application process. She will use the $1,500 award to cover the costs of her project’s interviews.

Eligibility
Doctoral candidates at The University of Texas at Austin are eligible to apply for the award.

Applicants must be in candidacy or must be able to demonstrate that they will be in candidacy by August 31st of the award year. Applicants must plan to conduct a rigorous dissertation that advances the donor's wishes to "research and study the cause, treatment, cure, and prevention of mental disease, mental illness, and mental disorders."
