Hogg Foundation for Mental Health
Bilingual Scholarship Program
The Hogg Foundation for Mental Health has launched a groundbreaking bilingual scholarship program that will award an estimated $1 million in the next three years to Spanish-speaking students at accredited graduate social work programs in Texas. The new statewide program is the first of its kind in Texas and possibly in the U.S.
The foundation is launching the scholarship program to raise awareness of the need for more cultural and linguistic diversity in the state’s mental health workforce and simultaneously begin to meet that need. The program also will help build cultural competence and diversity in higher education programs for mental health professions.
Eligibility
Scholarship recipients must attend one of 11 Texas graduate social work programs that are accredited or in candidacy for accreditation by the national Council on Social Work Education.
Recipients also must be fluent in Spanish and English and commit to work in Texas after graduation providing mental health services for a period equal to the timeframe of the scholarship.
Individual schools may have additional selection criteria for their programs.
Application Process
Interested applicants should contact the graduate school of their choice directly for information about the scholarships and the application process.
Scholarship applications must be submitted directly to eligible graduate schools of social work. The foundation will not accept applications directly.
Each school will develop its own process for assessing the linguistic fluency of applicants and selecting nominees. Schools will submit their scholarship nominees to the foundation, which will make the final determination.
Award Notification
The fall 2008 scholarship recipients will be announced in August.
Inquiries
Questions about the scholarship application process should be directed to the appropriate school.
