Hogg Foundation’s Executive Director Receives Academic Appointment to School of Social Work

AUSTIN, Texas – Dr. Octavio N. Martinez, Jr. has been appointed as a clinical professor in the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin, in addition to his role as executive director of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health.

As a faculty member, Martinez will collaborate in scholarly activities, provide guidance on grant proposals and behavioral health research, and mentor graduate students, according to Dr. Barbara White, dean of the school.

"We are honored to have someone with Dr. Martinez's credentials join our faculty. He brings extraordinary and valuable expertise, knowledge and research skills to our school," White said.

Martinez is a guest lecturer at the Harvard School of Public Health and a member of the American Psychiatric Association, American College of Mental Health Administration, National Hispanic Medical Association, Texas Society for Psychiatric Physicians, Harvard Faculty Club, and Reede Scholars, a network of public health leaders who have completed the Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Fellowship in Minority Health Policy at Harvard Medical School.

Before joining the foundation in 2008, he was an affiliate associate professor at the Brody School of Medicine in North Carolina, an assistant professor and psychiatrist at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and a faculty associate at the Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics. He also was director of the Psychiatric Consultation/Liaison Service for University Hospital and the Audie L. Murphy Veterans' Administration Hospital, and was co-director of Behavioral Sciences for the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Medical School.

He is licensed to practice medicine in Texas and North Carolina and is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has a master's degree in public health from Harvard University's School of Public Health, a doctor's degree in medicine from Baylor College of Medicine, and master's and bachelor's degrees in business administration with a concentration in finance from The University of Texas at Austin.
