Hogg Foundation Awards 2012 Ima Hogg Scholarships

October 4, 2012

The Hogg Foundation for Mental Health is pleased to announce that 11 Texas graduate social work students will each receive a $5,000 scholarship for the 2012-2013 academic year. The scholarship recipients have demonstrated a strong commitment to providing mental health services in Texas after graduation.

In recent years, the state of Texas has faced critical shortages in the mental health workforce, ranking far below the national average in the number of mental health professionals per 100,000 residents. The Ima Hogg Scholarship for Mental Health, established in 1956, addresses the need for more trained social workers who can deliver quality mental health services for Texans.

"Over fifty years after this scholarship program was established by Miss Hogg, it continues to be significant as Texas faces a widening gap between demand for and availability of mental health professionals," said Dr. Octavio N. Martinez, Jr., executive director of the Hogg Foundation.

The Ima Hogg Scholarship committee annually reviews and selects students who plan to provide mental health services after graduation. Applicants must attend an accredited graduate social work program in Texas and be nominated by the head of their program.

The 2012 recipients are:

  • Tara B. Pannell, Baylor University
  • Rebekah Valenta, Our Lady of the Lake University
  • William Windham, Stephen F. Austin State University
  • Rachel Parker, Texas A&M University - Commerce
  • Nicole Leonard, Texas State University
  • Jamie Chinn, University of Houston
  • Brittany Eghaneyan, University of Texas at Arlington
  • Sarah Fankhauser, University of Texas at Austin
  • Daniel Fierro, University of Texas at El Paso
  • Leslie Moya, University of Texas at Pan American
  • Annette Kampman, University of Texas at San Antonio

The Hogg Foundation advances recovery and wellness in Texas by funding mental health services, policy analysis, research and public education. The foundation was created in 1940 by the children of former Texas Gov. James S. Hogg and is part of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at The University of Texas at Austin.
