March 10, 2011

In November 2010, Montrose Counseling Center’s Safe Zones Project was listed as the first reason Houston and Harris County were selected as one of the 100 Best Communities for Youth by America’s Promise Alliance.

Safe Zones Project is an in-school counseling program for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth and their family members. The counseling is provided by a licensed therapist from MCC, thanks to a generous grant from the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health.

From small towns to some of the nation’s largest cities, although communities are facing challenges, they are making a real difference for young people. With the 100 Best Communities for Young People competition, America’s Promise Alliance recognizes the outstanding and innovative work of communities across the country that help reduce high school dropout rates and provide youth with a great place to live, learn and grow.  Safe Zones is one of three stories from winning communities featured in a video that offers a glimpse into what makes a community one of the 100 Best.
