What is Mental Illness?

Broadly defined, a mental illness is any diagnosable condition that may impair thinking, feeling, behavior, or interfere with a person's capacity to be productive and enjoy fulfilling relationships. Mental illnesses can take many forms and exhibit many symptoms, ranging in severity from mild to disabling. Biochemical or medical disorders may cause some mental health problems, while others may occur due to social, emotional, or personal dilemmas.

People experiencing a mental illness should recognize that their condition is not a character flaw. Rather, it is a legitimate illness that can be treated. Just as importantly, those affected by a mental illness should understand that they are not alone. The U.S. Surgeon General says that one in five Americans experience a mental disorder each year.

How Can I Get Help?

There is no "one size fits all" treatment for mental disorders. Once a person decides to seek help, they often face a dizzying array of mental health practitioners, treatment methods, and service settings. Individuals often rely upon trusted professionals who may be familiar with questions about mental health. As a first point of contact, these professionals can provide invaluable assistance in obtaining appropriate and effective care. For instance, some may feel comfortable raisisng questions with a family doctor, while other would preser a member of the clergy. If a child's health causes concern, parents can turn to a teacher or their pediatrician.

But how does one decide if a particular mental health practitioner is best suited to help with a mental difficulty? Depending upon the nature, diagnosis, and severity of the problem, there are any number of therapies and professional specialties that could be effective in treating particular disorders. What follows is a list of organizations to which licensed mental health professionals belong in the state of Texas. A brief description of the professional training required and the services provided by the professional training required and the services provided by each specialty is included, along with contact information.
